Favorites

(Under construction.  Check back soon for completed version!)

When I read a new blog, I always wonder about the person behind it.

If you're curious, here are some of my favorites.

Places

  • Home.  I'm a homebody at heart.  I love to travel and have adventures, but I am equally happy on my couch with a blanket tucked in around my edges.  I love making our home a cozy, welcoming place.
  • Lake City, Colorado.  I've spent three summers in this tiny mountain town, two of them with Aaron, and we like to call it our second home.  We love the people and the beauty.  It has been a place of healing, rest, and renewal for us.
  • India.  I don't know that I lived in India long enough to earn the right to say I love it.  I lived there long enough to see that I don't love everything about the country.  There were many things that frustrated and angered me.  But I also lived there long enough to see that it is lovely in many ways too, and that perhaps the things I cherish from middle-class America aren't so valuable after all.  India helped me to believe in the kingdom of heaven more than in the kingdom of man.

Hobbies

  • Gardening.  This is a fairly new hobby.  My mom and sister both love to garden, so I guess it was bound to wear off on me.  We travel a lot during our summers, so I'm waiting for the season of life when we're not as transitory, and I can garden with vigor!  We tried to garden long-distance this year, and it didn't work out so great.
  • Sewing.  I'm still a novice, but slowly, I'm acquiring skillz.  (With a z.)  Latest skill:  learning to sew in a zipper.
  • Cooking.  My cooking philosophy is why cook something you've already tried when you could cook something new?
  • Reading.  Oh books!  I changed my major three times in college before I finally decided that I just wanted to read books for my degree.  As my professor used to say, "It's not the question of what can an English major do; it's the question of what can an English major not do?"
  • Running.  Someday I will run a marathon.  Until then, running is my preferred form of exercise.  I would much rather run than join an exercise class, play an organized sport, or (horror upon horrors) lift weights.  Running frees me; it is my time to think, pray, and feel very much alive.
  • Traveling.  If I'm going to be in one place, I'm a homebody.  But if you gave me the choice between staying in one place and seeing the world, I would choose seeing the world hands-down. I've had the privilege to see Germany, India, Nepal, the Bahamas, and most of the continental 48.  Aaron and I are hoping to add several more countries to that this summer.

Things

  • Books.  One of my life-long dreams is to have a whole wall filled with books.  I don't think I could ever become a Kindle person.
  • Coffee.  I know.  Everybody says they love coffee.  Everybody, that is, except the one man out of millions that God gave me for life.  I always say the only sorrow of our marriage is that he doesn't drink.  Coffee.  About coffee:  I do like it.  I can quit.  I do drink it every morning because I haven't found a good reason to quit.
  • One-on-one conversations.  I love talking with girls!  My element is definitely one-on-one.  Put me in a big group, and I might be funny and engaging for a little bit, but I'll soon be pining for the couch with the blankets.  If you want to join me on the couch and chat -- now there's something I could do all night.
  • Antiques.  I get this love from my Mom.  She always had antiques around our house, and she was just as much interested in the story behind the item as the item itself.
